Abstract

ABSTRACT
This essay proposes the use of the Institutional Economic Theory of Douglas North, as a theoretical
framework in the context of entrepreneurship. Initially it was shown that the studies and publications on
entrepreneurship in Brazil, in general, use theoretical references of authors connected to two current
major studies of entrepreneurship: the economists and the behaviorists. It was also emphasized some
critics made by some authors to entrepreneurship. From the analysis of the Institutional Economic
Theory, it is clear the importance of the Institutions in the process of creating an environment in societies
leading to economic, social and sustainable development.
